Livorno’s province is mostly coastline, a long strip running south from the port city of Livorno to Piombino, plus most of the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago.

Livorno itself is a working port, with canals in its Venezia quarter and a fish stew, cacciucco, that it is very proud of. South of the city, the Etruscan Coast takes in Castiglioncello, Cecina and San Vincenzo. Inland, Bolgheri sits at the end of its long avenue of cypresses, the one Giosuè Carducci wrote about, among some of Italy’s best-known vineyards. At Baratti and Populonia, near Piombino, there are Etruscan tombs a short walk from the beach.

Ferries cross from Piombino to Elba, and boats run from Livorno out to little Capraia. Elba’s seven comuni have their own page. The mainland towns and Capraia are below.

There are 12 towns (comuni) here, with 126 villages and hamlets between them. Each town has its own section below, with its villages listed in alphabetical order. The lists come from my own records, so the odd tiny hamlet may be missing.

Looking for Elba? It has its own page.

I’m adding proper pages for the towns and villages bit by bit, so do pop back. For the rest of Tuscany, head back to Villages of Tuscany.
