Prato is Tuscany’s smallest province, with just seven comuni, and its youngest: it was split off from Florence’s province in 1992.
The city of Prato has been a cloth town since the Middle Ages and is still one of Europe’s big textile centres. Its cathedral has an outdoor pulpit by Donatello and Michelozzo, where the relic of the Virgin’s girdle is shown to the crowds on feast days, and inside are frescoes by Filippo Lippi. Prato is also where cantucci, the hard almond biscuits, come from.
To the south, Carmignano has been making wine for centuries, and close by are the Medici villas of Poggio a Caiano and Artimino, known as La Ferdinanda. North of the city, the Val di Bisenzio climbs through Vaiano and Vernio to Cantagallo: quiet mountain country of chestnut woods and stone villages.
There are 7 towns (comuni) here, with 136 villages and hamlets between them. Each town has its own section below, with its villages listed in alphabetical order. The lists come from my own records, so the odd tiny hamlet may be missing.
